¶ "Are you so stupid that you could not hold a person's attention for three minutes?" A typical surfer can read around four pages of text, at about 270 words per minute in that time. And I think you can manage that. Remember your answer to the question? Surfers who are not interested in your product will not read beyond your main heading. Surfers who are interested in your product will read everything in sight. So get the old juices going, your reader wants more.
¶ Always include a signature when you send an e-mail. It's form not to make the signature longer than four lines, because they can get cut off in news groups and NN. Keep the signature's width short, URL code can get forced onto the next line and sometimes make it unusable. The signature should always include your URL and your free offer or message. There is no need to include your name or e-mail address as they are found elsewhere.
¶ When a surfer responds by sending you their e-mail address they are hot and are likely to be the most productive - if you reply promptly. "Your most valuable asset is your hot list" I. Robson may 1999 It is a million times more likely to produce a result than an e-mail sent to someone as an automatic response from your FFA Links Page. Spend as much time as possible tweaking your e-mailing list; a perfect list, like a "hole in one", is almost impossible to achieve.
¶ DO NOT SPAM. Internet users hate spam with a vengeance. Spam is untargeted, unsolicited e-mail, i.e. junk-e-mail. Do it at your peril; there are some who dream in machine code and they delight in a genuine excuse to ruin your chances. You've been warned. It is also illegal. Every time someone posts a link to your links page or guestbook, capture their e-mail address and send them a "thank you". Later send them a "warning, revisit, your link is out of date" etc. Then request permission to send updates of a news letter. It is possible to rent targeted e-mail lists compiled by the direct marketing industry of people who have previously agreed to receive commercial e-mail messages.
¶ Why should you go with Hurricane Electric when you can get unlimited traffic elsewhere? You get what you pay for! For example, some of Hurricane Electric's web servers cost about $6500 each. Also, about 1,000,000 hits per day will consume a full T1 (if you don't continually saturate it). Given that these two things are base costs, a flat rate service will not have the incentive to put you on to a server with as few as 3 other people if you are generating 300,000 hits per day. Whereas, Hurricane Electric would have the incentive to give you the high performance platform you deserve. Hurricane Electric pride themselves in high performance web servers that deliver.
* No setup fee if you're moving a domain name from another ISP.
** Does not include InterNIC registration fee. You'll receive an invoice from InterNIC via email.
*** Includes master POP3 mailbox associated with the shell account.
If you are serious about doing business get a '.com' address. And get the site hosted in America. I am a VAR (Value Added Reseller) for Hurricane Electric. Should you wish to order an account, please enter ian@w3b-ink.com in the Rep Email address box. Then I will be your first point of contact if you get into any difficulties or just need some information!
Hurricane Electric / info@he.net
¶ Most of the people who surf the Internet and are used to buying products are in America. Get a .com address, Americans like to buy from home. When setting your Internet sales target be realistic. The Internet is a very competitive and fickle market place. You are unlikely to hit the jackpot straight away, if ever. Do not promote your site too soon. The web site must be ready before you go live. Under Construction signs, NO.
¶ Put your URL on ALL of your office stationary, even put it on it's own piece of paper. Double check the printer got it right... the slashes to the right... no spaces, all the dots and don't forget the case. Advertise your URL with your product. The URL is a point of sale tool! When the reader views your advert, they can be referred to your web site for more information and to purchase your product.
¶ "Take precautions to make sure you get your share" says M. Declan Dunn. Like any business, check out what's going on. Affiliate programs are simply your chance to resell other's products and services. Make sure you believe in what you are selling. Take the same precautions you would in the real world; what will be your investment in time, and money? Have you actually tried the product or service? A personal recommendation and belief is much more powerful than selling something simply because it has a good profit margin. Are you just generating leads for someone else? Be careful, there are affiliate programs that have no intention of paying you for what they are selling. You don't want to have to wait six months after making tremendous sales for a company! Make sure you get paid for what you sell. Often this means waiting 30 days for a monthly check. Sometimes it means quarterly payments, like Amazon.com does (I think). Post master Direct - the mailing LISTS people. They'll also help you do all sorts of internet marketing things.
¶ If you run a small(ish) business, you can not compete with others unless you are able to accept credit cards. Accepting credit cards is an essential part of beating the competition. Here's one for you... give it a try. Charge.Com
¶ Market your site. The bottom line (again) is that you will have to market the site and the offer. If you just put up a number of affiliate programs, hoping one will pull, you are taking the magic dust approach. It is like the lottery; you may win, but the odds are against you. Take the responsibility to market and promote your offers; find out where the customers are and drive them to the site. By many estimates, you will have to generate 500 visitors a day to make decent money; that's over 15,000 visitors a month. Your minimum amount of visitors should be 5,000 for a successful program; it is simple a case of maths. One percent of 5,000 is 50; can you make enough money on 50 sales? But if you are making $25 a sale, you could make $1,250 per month. Keep your expectations realistic; realize that marketing and sales are a numbers game. Know the numbers you hope to generate and focus on those affiliate programs that give you the best bang for your time and effort.
¶ Don't just display a banner ad and hope for the best. Many affiliate programs put up banner ads; the visitor simply clicks on the banner ad and goes to the company's Web Site to make the buying decision. The problem with banner ads is that 1-2% of people will actually click on them; so if you generated 1,000 visitors in a month, only 10-20 will even click on the banner ad. If you even convert 5% of those to sales, you will make only one or two sales a month. It is all a game of numbers; if you have a site with great traffic, this can change. But volume businesses are difficult to profit from; the bottom line is, do more than just put a banner up at your site. The same logic applies to posting at newsgroups; because it is so easy to post to many newsgroups, people believe that volume will generate results. The results have proven to be awful; mass newsgroups postings, like bulk email, are dangerous and rarely yield the returns. They are more a headache than a benefit in most cases.
¶ If you've got a web site / home page! why not earn a little extra cash while you are promoting YOURSELF AND THE KIDS or your hacking, cracking hobby! Become an affiliate. By the way, you're not going to get rich, so don't hold your breath waiting. Becoming an affiliate for other Web sites' products and services is a simple way to earn some extra cash. Sell one thing and sell it Well. For instance I recommend Economy Travel. I used to get about £100.00 per month until Sept 11. Nothing since.
¶ This is an experimental piece of text. You don't have to read it. It is designed to link in with the keywords. If you found me by typing in a keyword, this gobbledygook is probably what helped to do it! But be warned, Yahoo may not like it. Worth a try?? ;)

¶ Create a banner and join one of the Free Banner Exchanges. You must include the rotating banner code on your site. Very popular, but ineffective unless you have the artistic talent to create an outstanding banner. Link Exchange is the biggest. I think that most banner advertising isn't really worth the money, so step back and think before you jump in. Click-Throughs from banner advertising can be low and unrewarding, expect about one percent at best. I don't like banners much either.
¶ Free For All Links Pages will bring a massive surge of traffic to your site! But not through genuine inquisitiveness. FFA Blaster is a typical program that will add you to around 12,000 links pages in around ten minutes. And automatically - with a little help - set up a FFA links page for you. Then the 12,000 can visit your site!! One collects the e-mail addresses and hey presto send a none spam e-mail as a "thank you". It's all done automatically, one big happy family! The one BIG problem with FFA links pages is the huge number of e-mails! One can get thousands. A total turn off. Even the search engines are getting wise, they may not list you if your on a FFA links page? As you might have guessed, I don't like FFA pages.
¶ Treat the visitor like a lost child. Walk with them around your site, guiding them this way then that way. One wants the visitor to click the links to your other pages so make them very clickable. I should take my own advice.
¶ If you belong to a trade association, ask for a link, your chances of getting one are higher if you provide them with an interesting artical. Develope an out of the way links page, surfers do like clicking those links and vaporising in to thin air. OK, here's some old ones of mine Click Here. bye bye. Let the most important links be the ones pointing to your site, you shell fish bar steward.
¶ When asking for a link it's a good idea to provide the code! below is some code for an HTML Banner. All you have to do is Cut and Past it to your document. Most visitors arrive from outside links. So get links from like minded sites. Create an HTML banner, they load very quickly. Here's the code:
<!-- start of w3b-ink.com link code -->
<center>
<table border="0" width="400"> <!-- 468 x 60 = normal banner size -->
<tr><td align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#D5DECB" width="400">
<table border="0" width="398" bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
<tr><td align="center">
<font size="5" face="verdana, arial" color="#0000A1">

<a href="http://www.w3b-ink.com/">
<font size="2" face="verdana, courier" color="#FF0000">
@ w 3 b - i n k</font><a>
</td></tr></table>
</td></tr></table></center>
<!-- end of w3b-ink.com code -->

¶ The best link in the World is from the favourites (MSIE) or "Bookmark" (NN). You must remind the surfer to add you to their list. Of course, it's best when they want to add you to their favourites because they like your site. Wow the surfer and make your site stand out like the dog's bollocks from the crowd of little e's by incerting an icon (a little image called favicon.ico) in to their favourites list, in their browsers Address Bar and on the Task Bar - also on their Desktop if a link to your site be placed there! (only works with Internet Explorer 5 [MSIE 5]) Here's how & what to do:
There's hours of fun to be had and big rewards.
¶ Some Search Engines and Indexs show the date a page was submitted. If the page (of your competitor) is dated before 1997, resubmit it. The web page is bound to contain outdated code and it will be relegated to a much lower position.
¶ Most of the search engines now view "mirror pages (multiple copies of the same page)" as spam and they may not list you.
¶ The big No-Nos are: don't use misleading keywords or any technique that shows your web site in a different light. Don't fill (spam) your documents with keywords - visible or invisible. Check to see if your site is optimized! www.proboost.com - if you want!
¶ Submitting your documents to Search Engines and Directories should definately be a part of your site promotion strategy. But get real, there is around half a billion pages on the WWW, the odds are getting shorter and shorter against being found for those Marketeers who don't follow a marketing plan. If you decide to let a promotion company market your site expect to pay over a thousand pounds sterling, infact several thousand! If you are paying less!! And in the Ad' they say "We will promote you to the Top 400+ Search Engines." They are using promotion software that costs around $80.00 and it could be the coup de grace for your web site.
¶ A single mention of your URL and some editorial about your web site in a national newspaper could bring thousands of repeat visitors, no search engine will ever help you that much. Conventional advertising is (at the moment) very valuable and can pay humungus dividends.
¶ If your mad enough to use submission software, only submit 10 URLs per day to each of the minor search engines. Some search engines ignore (large) multiple submissions. !VERY IMPORTANT! Don't submit the same URL more than once per day. If you hit a problem and you are not sure if your submission has been accepted, go back the next day.
¶ Hierarchical Indexes or Directories such as the ubiquitous Yahoo, concentrate wholly on the description you enter in their form. Keep the description very short and relevant. Your submission will be inspected by an Internet Guru and you know what they can be like! If you've thought about a way to cheat Yahoo, think again, because you will be cheating someone who is better than you! Don't be clever. Follow Yahoo's submission instructions to the letter. A bad rating equals no entry, forever. Check your listing with Yahoo after two weeks. Submit again if your not in. It might take a few attempts. Are you having some difficulties getting listed with Yahoo? You could always try and e-mail them: url-support@yahoo-ink.com. They want the exact URL you submitted. Don't hold your breath. Yahoo will only index the principal URL of your web site, unless you are Microsoft! There is tons on the Internet about getting listed with Yahoo and how important it is; well one can multiply it by 100 and divide that into the number you first thought of, then chuck 99% away and read what you've got left! Yahoo is not the be all and end all, but it is important. Produce a bloody good web site with some quality content, follow their rules and you should be OK.
¶ One of the big Internet turn-offs is "HTTP/1.0 404 Object Not Found" and there are numerous variations on this message! So if one of your documents becomes defunct but has a listing on a search engine, DON'T delete it, alter it - make it point to another page or something.
¶ Search engines that use Spider Software; should follow the links within your principal URL, normally index.html, unfortunately they sometimes forget! Submit a comprehensive site map with textual links. Submit the pages that are full of text first. Then the pages that are full of graphics. Obviously you will have greater success and less competition if the topic of you web site is original. See if you can introduce a new angle.
¶ Don't use submission software to automatically register your web site with the most important search engines. Go to each one and fill in the form. OK, this does take time....But it's worth it. There are a number of free submission tools, as I said, don't be tempted.
¶ Submit each page to the search engines that robotically trawl the Internet - i.e. AltaVista, Excite, HotBot, Lycos, Infoseek and Webcrawler.
